Yeosu City Museum Heading Towards the Sea

It aims to build a Yeosu museum that represents the identity of the city. We tried to capture the historicity and originality of Yeosu. According to the history of the name of city, Yeosu had two districts and were called "Wonchon" and "Dolsan". Dolsan refers to the part of the island that rises above the sea. and it means are "suddenly extrude". During the dynasty of unification of Silla period, Wonchon was renamed Hae-wop / Dolsan was renamed Yeosan which means a hut; metaphoric expression of The islands in the Yeosu Sea look like huts roofs. During the Josun Dynasty, Hae-wop was renamed Yeosu which meant that the water was beautiful, and the current name "Yeosu" comes from this. Yeosan was renamed Dolsan and is subordinated to present-day Yeosu in the administrative region. Through historical research the place names reflecting the geographical characteristics of Yeosu, the design concept was extracted from "extrusion", "islands" and "water space".

The site has open views to the sea limited to the south due to the apartments and commercial buildings surrounding the park and the rocky mountains within the park were in need of image improvement in terms of landscape. Based on site analysis and design concepts, We set up a water space that attracted the Yeosu Sea and formed an island with territoriality on the 1st floor of the ground. The upper floors planned a mass protruding from the rocky mountains towards the sea, and a muzeo-graphy, in which the architectural space itself became an exhibition space. The muzeo-graphy have planned an original and beautiful water space unique to the Yeosu City Museum by inserting the National Treasure No. 249 Yeosu Offshore Sea Diagram at the bottom of the water space.
