The rouge river as spatial objectives, May 2021

Architects: Sung Wook Song

Urban mapping Beyound Built-environment: Curvelinear the rouge rivers in Michigan, U.S fight with urban grid system and make unpredictable natural space qualities in cities. At each scale of this map the Rouge River is examined in its role as both agent and object. At times local and regional infrastructure adjusts to the natural form of the river; other times the river is simply an obstacle to be ignored. At times the river functions as green space, refuge and natural element; abruptly it is channeled and completely controlled by people. At times the river acts as infrastructure itself, not dividing or uniting but simply passing through. Its relationship to human habitat varies accordingly-from gathering space to no-man’s-land, and sometimes something in between.
